The Dorymates were formed in 1995 when Larry Skinner, vocals, guitar and harmonica, got together to play music with Glenn St.Croix on button accordion. These early bookings were in small pubs catering to Newfoundland and Maritime people who had relocated to Calgary for employment. But The Dorymates also had a chance to introduce many Albertans and Western Canadians to good, down-east entertainment.
Over a period of several years, the band grew to be a five piece band playing all over Alberta and occasionally venturing into British Columbia. The Dorymates have opened for many well known East Coast bands including The Punters, Kilt, Kilkenny Crew and also The Fables.
Presently a four piece band, The Dorymates strive to bring the joy and energy of East Coast music to Western Canada. We look for opportunities to perform our lively, fun filled music in pubs looking to experience a down home "kitchen party."
Although the members of The Dorymates have all chosen to leave Newfoundland to find a better life for themselves and their families out west, we have chosen not to let go of our East Coast roots. As long as pubs still want East Coast music, The Dorymates plan to be around Calgary and Alberta to provide it.
Then, in early 2010, Larry Skinner made the decision that he’d been away from Newfoundland for too long. After much thought, he decided to move back home. This meant that the rest of the band had a decision to make; to fold the band or to look for a new singer and continue to play. This was a big decision for us, as well.
We put out a few enquires and had a few auditions. As a result of this search, we selected Phonse Hann from Long Harbour, Newfoundland. Phonse brings to The Dorymates a wealth of experience playing in both Rock and Celtic Rock bands in Newfoundland and Alberta. Our mandate hasn't changed, it still is to bring that fun-filled Down East music to Western Canada.
